Research

Research constitute the basis of the formative function if the University, the way toward progess of the scientific community and the knowledge transfer to society.

The research activities in the University is carried out by the Recognized Research Groups (RRG), that are composed by researcher that develop their activity jointly and collaboratively through research lines, independently or in collaboration with other groups or entities, from the University or external to it.

The research lines of the Thermal Energy Engineering RRG are:

Technologies for HVAC systems

Development and optimization of new technologies for Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems with the objective of reducing the environmental impact of the air-conditioning and heating systems of buildings. The activity of this research lines is divided in different study ways:

Energy Efficiency of Buildings

Energy simulation of building models in order to quantify their energy demand and their energy consumption associated to HVAC, lighting and drew hot water systems.

Optimization of the energy efficiency of buildings by means of Orthogonal Design of Experiments. Prioritization of strategies based on their repercussion in the greenhouse gas emissions reduction according to the index of the Energy Efficiency Certification.

Integration of Renewable Energy Systems in Buildings

Design and sizing of HVAC systems based on the utilization of different natural resources: solar energy, biomass, geothermal energy and environment energy.

Indoor Environment Quality and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) in buildings and building services

Study of the existing contamination in indoor environments, such as physical, chemical and biological pollution. Furthermore, the degree of ventilation provided by HVAC systems is analyzed as a lack of ventilation supposes an increase in the concentration of indoor pollutants and a excessive ventilation increase the energy consumption.

This research line also includes life cycle and environmental cost analysis of buildings and building services.
